Sociable Movie Guy
REVIEWS
A CROWDED AND NONSENSICAL FUN RIDE (After a long- and unplanned-hiatus like this, I usually start my post by apologizing for abandoning this blog for a long time. But I know you all are tired of that so I’ll just skip it and jump right into the review :p) For the past few months, we’ve been fed with lots of Suicide Squad promotional posters, teasers, and trailers. The hype has been crazy. Everyone is buzzing and talking about how they are very excited to see the movie. Including me. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn’s Empire cover has been sitting on my phone as the main wallpaper since the magazine came out. But sadly I can’t help but feeling disappointed walking out the theater after seeing Suicide Squad. Here’s why. Set in the same universe where Batman and Superman live, Suicide Squad is a team created by Amanda Waller (Oscar-nominee Viola Davis) who is some sort of head of A.R.G.U.S (Advanced Research Group Uniting Super-Humans). The members of the team are all criminals currently inhabit the Belle Reve prison. They are Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Oscar-nominee Will Smith), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and Slipknot (Adam Beach). She formed the team as the anticipation to incoming dangerous threats that may be too big to handle by regular soldiers. (MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD. YOU’VE BEEN WARNED) I’ll just be straight forward here. The main problem with Suicide Squad is the movie has too many nonsensical things going on in it I literally don’t know where to start. I think it is because both the story and the characters are poorly written. For example, the main villains in the film are depicted so strong and yet they do something that doesn’t feel necessary in doing their mission. I’m talking about the machine they’re making almost the entire film. I mean, don’t you guys think they really can just snap their fingers and we’re all going to die? Why bother wasting their time building the ‘destruction’ machine? Their motivation in doing so is just as confusing. It is said because humans no longer worship them and start worshipping machines more. Well, yes I get it but I’m sorry it is just not convincing enough. Another major let down is how the Joker (Oscar-winner Jared Leto) acts. Yes, he’s supposed to be crazy and wacky. But the Joker here is just uncharismatic and over the top. Instead of being terrified, I feel super annoyed every time he shows up. Leto is a good actor but the material given to him is not. But the biggest head-scratching character goes to Amanda freakin’ Waller. I remember saw her character in the DC animated film ‘Batman: Assault on Arkham’ that is way better than the one in Suicide Squad. Unlike in the animated film, the Amanda Waller here is selfish, stubborn, and very obnoxious. It almost feels like she forms the squad just for herself. She should have been a strong, respected (and sometimes feared) authoritative figure. But the film makes her even more hate-able than the main villains. Enough with the bad things and now let’s talk about the highlights of the film. First and foremost is Margot Robbie as the lethal Harley Quinn. Although her transition from being sane to insane is still questionable, she’s basically the one who’s responsible for giving the film its charm. It’s interesting to see where DC’s next films will take her character and how they will develop her. I also find the music in the film interesting. DC must have spent a lot of money for the music since the people contributing to the soundtracks are all household names. From Imagine Dragons to Twenty One Pilots, the songs certainly support the film all in the right way. The visual in Suicide Squad is another thing to adore. The film is bursting with vibrant and eye-popping colours that is surely a treat for the eyes.
Although it is somewhat still enjoyable, Suicide Squad is the perfect example of no matter big the promotion or the cast of the film is, it all comes down to the story. If the story fails, then the whole film will fail too. Score: 2.5/5
